The workshop gets a traverse crane

The atmosphere in the FFS workshop in Lundevågen was electric, when the new overhead crane was hoisted into place.

Workshop manager Ronny Christoffersen leads the operation by hoisting the crane into place.

- This is very much anticipated. We who work here have dreamed of such a crane since we moved in, says workshop manager Ronny Christoffersen, and adds:

- A mechanical workshop is not complete without a overhead crane.

THE JOB WITH lifting the crane onto the rails, which are mounted under the roof, took around an hour and a half. The six-tonne crane was lifted into place by a mobile crane from Lister Kranservice and a crane truck from Hansen Renovasjon.

A whole gang from FFS was also on hand to help. Both trucks and lifts were used. And the workshop manager himself had overall command of the operation.

- THE CRANE WILL make work in the workshop easier, safer and cost-saving. We no longer need to roll in mobile cranes, trucks with cranes or forklifts every time we have to carry out a lift. A job that previously required three more men can now be carried out with just one person, says Christoffersen.

In the last year alone, the mechanical workshop in Lundevågen has had several new strings to play on. Especially after the new water cutting table came into place, the staff knew that it would be very good with a traverse crane.

- It can lift up to ten tonnes, will be able to be used throughout the hall and give the workshop much better functionality, says Christoffersen.

TRAVERS CRANE consists of a crane bridge mounted on one or more trolleys with a lifting mechanism. It can move in three planes – one vertical and two horizontal.

FFS has bought the crane new from Industrikran Norge AS in Sandnes. The crane runway itself has been installed and painted by FFS itself.

- We are looking forward to putting the crane into use. I would like to believe that it will happen already this week, says Christoffersen.
