Every five years, all commercial vessels operating under international and national maritime regulations must undergo a new classification, including an inspection of the hull, equipment, and the vessel's general condition.

The classification ensures that the vessel maintains the safety standards and operational efficiency required for maritime activities.

"IT INVOLVES control and a complete overhaul of all engines, hull, generators, and propellers. The electrical system is also reviewed, and all tanks and the hull's bottom are measured for thickness. The onboard safety equipment is checked as well," says Nilsen.

FFS Athos is considered Norway's greenest tugboat. It operates on electric power for to and from its towing assignments, saving the environment from emissions and customers from costs.

IN CONNECTION with the classification, Farmar takes the opportunity to make several upgrades onboard.

"Some of the engines will be replaced. In addition, we will make some improvements along the way on things that the crew has requested," says Nilsen.

FFS Athos was built in 2014 and has been owned by Farmar since early 2020. It is primarily used for harbor towing, long-distance towing, assistance, and salvage.

THE FACT THAT he classification of FFS Athos is happening in Denmark is no coincidence. FFS Amaranth, which was later sold out of the Farmar fleet, underwent its five-year classification here in January last year. Five months later, FFS Arion did the same.

"We have a very good cooperation with shipyards in Denmark. So for classifications, we often use these," says Nilsen.

All Farmar boats still carry the FFS name. The plan is to carry out a rebranding of the fleet as soon as the registration is approved, probably during the spring.
