The MEG module for the Valhall project had been completed at Nymo’s yard in Grimstad. But the next stage was just as crucial: the enormous structure had to be transported safely to Aker Solutions’ yard at Stord.

Farmar was awarded the assignment and delivered a complete towing operation, with the tug Farmar Ares as the lead vessel and Farmar Athos providing assistance.

THE APPROXIMATELY 1,000-tonne module was positioned on a large barge when the tow began. On board, the margins were tight and the importance of the operation was significant.

The MEG module is a central part of the Valhall PWP-Fenris project and will help regenerate and reuse monoethylene glycol. This is the chemical that prevents hydrate formation and ensures stable gas transport between Valhall and Fenris in the North Sea.

The project is scheduled to come on stream in 2027.

JOHN W. NILSEN, managing director of Farmar, served as towmaster during the operation, meaning he held overall responsibility for planning, leading and coordinating the tow from start to finish.

“We delivered a complete package, and the tow went smoothly from start to finish,” says Nilsen.

He makes no secret of the fact that this was a prestigious assignment.

“Of course, it is hugely exciting to be part of an operation like this. But there is also a great deal at stake. The MEG module is a key component in the Valhall PWP-Fenris project. That is why every part of this operation was carefully planned,” says Nilsen.

THE TOW MARKS not only an important milestone for the development of Valhall and Fenris, but also for the supply chain surrounding the project.

At the yard in Grimstad, the module has formed part of a major industrial effort, with high activity, full employment and significant local ripple effects.

The module will now be integrated with the new production and wellhead platform at Stord before installation on the field.
