There was a sombre backdrop as Farmar’s Chief Executive Officer, John W. Nilsen, delivered his presentation at the Lister Business Day at Lyngdal Cultural Centre.

Before a packed audience, he described how global instability and Russia’s so-called shadow fleet are making everyday operations increasingly challenging for serious maritime players.

"THE SHADOW FLEET is creating significant uncertainty in today’s market,” Nilsen said from the stage, pointing to challenges related to sanctions, ownership structures and operational risk.

According to the Farmar CEO, the requirements for control and compliance have increased substantially.

“It is difficult to know who you can work for and with. Thorough due diligence is required for all operations,” he said, stressing that poor assessments can have serious consequences.

IN HIS PRESENTATION Nilsen also looked ahead. Pressure on European ports is creating new opportunities for operators with available space and a long-term perspective.

“As one of very few private players, we are developing a port designed for tomorrow’s needs, with flexible solutions that allow the area to be adapted to customer requirements,” Nilsen said.

THIS YEAR, the Lister Business Day attracted 275 participants, a new record. Organised by the Lister Business Association and Sparebanken Norge, the event has consolidated its position as the region’s most important meeting place for the business community.

“It is very positive that as many as 80 per cent of the participants represent the business sector. This day gives us the opportunity to showcase some of the region’s real gems,” said Hans Fredrik Grøvan, Managing Director of the Lister Business Association.

THE SHIPYARD GROUP Green Yard, in which Farmar is a co-owner, was also given a platform at the conference.

Group CEO Hans Jørgen Fedog delivered strong criticism of the Norwegian authorities’ lack of commitment to maritime preparedness and warned of developments on the international stage.
